A single work

Listening to Roderigo's Concerto de Aranjuez on the way to the office, I was pondering what it must be like to have the success of one work so dominate popular perception of your creativity.

Did Holst, for example, sit at home, chew his pencil, and mutter, 'Damn, the Planets'?

It seems to have crippled a number of writers - Harper Lee paralysed by a mocking bird and J.D. Salinger propelled into seclusion after being caught in the rye.

In Rodrigo's case, it appears to have had the opposite effect, anchoring a long life of sustained creativity; and, exercising considerable freedom in how it was expressed.

The concerto was written on his honeymoon and you can listen to the long, central adagio as intimate celebration of new found joy. It is music that is unashamedly happy, accessible without ever being merely light.

I do love that music. I studied classical guitar in my teens, seduced by the sound of Segovia on one of our family's records. The sound of guitar seems to resonate in my "heart" like no other instrument. I wonder if that is true for other people such as you...

Yes, I can understand that except for me the instrument is the cello. Like a totemic animal maybe each of us has a totemic instrument, that for whatever personal associations, reaches deeper than others.

I was almost going to add in my comment that for me the cello resonates in the abdomen! These two instruments both seem particularly deep-reaching to me.
